Fredriksvern verft

Fredriksvern has played an important part in the development of Stavern as well as in Norwegian maritime history during the years, and the place has probably been a harbour since ancient times.

During the winter of 1748-49 king Frederik V. of Denmark-Norway ordered construction of a shipyard and a drydock in Norway, and in 1750 the first Norwegian naval base was constructed.

The naval station had strong fortification, moats and many buildings. Outside the moats Norway's first garrrison church was built. This rococo mastepiece was completed in 1756.

The commanding officer's lodge from 1751, the guardroom, two forges, the smith's house, a magazine, two provisional storehouses, the barge shed, the galley sheds and the gunpowder house are all still present at the former naval base, and many tourists travel to Stavern each and every year to experience these historical buildings.

Fredriksvern became the main base for the Royal Norwegian Navy when Norway and Denmark split in 1814, and continued to be an important naval base – it remained active as an air force academy until 2002.

There are several art galleries and small museums here, and the area offers exciting activities all year round.

Ula Beach

The beach is in the heart of a small bay protected from the wild ocean. It has fine shallow sandy beaches surrounded by smooth rocks in the archipelago of Skagerrak.

In the old days Ula was an important harbor and fishing port. The sea outside of Ula can be tough, so the well-known lodesman Ulabrand safeguarded many sailors here. There is a stone monument of Ulabrand at the top of the mountain hill by the harbor. From this spot, you will experience an extraordinary view, so don't miss it when you get here. Today, Ula is a popular holiday resort with many cabins and a charming marina. The coastal trail passes by and makes it a great place for hiking. There's a kiosk, trash cans and a swimming raft. Toilets at the camping area.

To get there by car, follow Rv303/Tjøllingveien to Ulaveien. Signs to Ula. Parking at the end of the road.

Tvistein Lighthouse

Tvistein Lighthouse stands on the eastern of two small islets about three kilometers south of Hummerbakkfjorden. The lighthouse is a coastal lighthouse and has beds for up to 17 people. The season is from May to September.

There are great fishing and diving opportunities around Tvistein. Tvistein Lighthouse is also a great destination for day visitors. From the wharf, there are great swimming opportunities, and it is well organized to get ashore easily. Due to the good distribution between the islands, there is often great clear water out here.

The accommodation
The lighthouse has 17 beds in 7 rooms. There is 1 bedroom in the main house, 1 in the "Fyrgården" and 5 in the outhouse. The room in the main house has 5 beds, and the room in "Fyrgården" has room for 2. The 5 rooms in the outhouse have 2-3 beds in each, distributed between double beds and bunk beds.

There may be other visitors to the lighthouse at the same time. As an overnight guest, you share the kitchen, bathroom and toilet with the other overnight guests. The bathroom is in the main house, while the shared kitchen is in the "Fyrgården", also called "Sjefsboden" (meaning the chief booth). There are several outdoor areas to use, but also a common living room in the Machine House, if you want to sit inside.

Overnight guests must bring their own bedding (duvets and pillows are provided), as well as their own food, drink and water. Water from the cisterns can be used for brushing teeth, washing hands and for cooking, but it is not drinking water. The kitchen is fully equipped, and there is a barbecue for free use.

Booking
Booking via e-mail to booking@tvistein.info. It is also possible to buy gift vouchers if you want to give away an overnight stay experience!

Transportation
Transport to and from the lighthouse is from Laberget marina in Nevlunghavn.
There is free parking for cars right by the boat harbor in Nevlunghavn.

It is also possible to arrive on the island by your own boat, or by taxi boat if you want to come for a day visit. There are also boats that can be hired by groups on request. The harbor at Tvistein is well sheltered from the southwest, but not from the north. There can be a lot of sea in the harbor, so be aware if you come in your own boat.
